Free Printable Freezer Inventory Sheet (PDF, No Email)
Here is a free printable freezer inventory sheet: a four-page PDF in Letter and A4, colour or ink-saving black and white, with no e-mail sign-up. It has 35 rows by food type, a chest freezer page by zone, a Best by column and a chart of how long each food keeps its best quality at 0 °F.
What is on the sheet
The PDF has four pages. Print all of them, or only the one that fits your freezer.
Page 1 — What’s in my freezer. Thirty-five rows split into six groups: meat and poultry, fish and seafood, vegetables and fruit, ready meals and bakery, home-cooked and leftovers, dairy and other. Each row has the item, five circles to cross off one pack at a time, the date it went in, and a Best by date. The strip at the bottom lists fifteen everyday foods with the months they keep their best quality, so the Best by column fills itself in.

Page 2 — Chest freezer inventory. The same columns, grouped by where things are instead of what they are: the basket, the top layer, the middle and the bottom. A chest freezer is the one place where things truly disappear, and a list by layer is what makes the bottom findable without emptying it.

Page 3 — How long frozen food keeps. All 125 foods, grouped by type, with the number of months each keeps its best quality at 0 °F. Tape it inside a cupboard door; it answers the question you would otherwise search for with cold hands.

Page 4 — A blank inventory. Thirty-five rows without the food groups, for anyone who already has their own system.
How to use it in five minutes
- Print the page for your freezer — page 1 for an upright or a freezer drawer, page 2 for a chest freezer.
- Write down what is already in there, oldest first. If you do not know when something went in, write your best guess and a question mark — a rough date is far more useful than none.
- Fill in Best by from the chart: the date in, plus the months. Chicken breast frozen on March 3 keeps its best quality until about December 3.
- Hang it where the pen is. On the freezer door with a magnet, or taped inside the lid of a chest freezer. Slip it into a plastic sleeve and a dry-erase marker works on it again and again.
- Cross off one circle per pack as you take things out, and add a row whenever you put something new in.
The chest freezer version
A chest freezer has no shelves, so the order has to come from you. The rule the sheet is built around is oldest on top: new shopping goes to the bottom layer, and whatever has been there longest moves up to where you see it. The basket holds small loose things — a bag of peas, a stick of butter — that would otherwise slide to the bottom. More on laying one out in how to organize a chest freezer.
How long everyday foods keep their best quality
These are the fifteen foods most people have in their freezer, with the months they stay at their best at 0 °F — the number Frostlog uses, with the USDA FoodKeeper range in brackets where it gives one. The full list of 125 is on page 3 of the PDF, and there is more detail by food in how long can you freeze food.
| Food | Best quality (FoodKeeper range) |
|---|---|
| Chicken breast | 9 months |
| Ground beef | 4 months (3–4) |
| Steak | 9 months (4–12) |
| Sausages | 2 months (1–2) |
| Salmon | 3 months (2–3) |
| Shrimp | 12 months (6–18) |
| Mixed vegetables | 10 months (10–18) |
| Peas | 8 months |
| Berries | 12 months (10–18) |
| Pizza | 12 months |
| Fries | 12 months |
| Nuggets | 3 months (1–3) |
| Leftovers | 3 months (2–3) |
| Bread | 5 months (3–5) |
| Ice cream | 6 months |
These months are about taste and texture. Food kept at 0 °F stays safe indefinitely — freezing stops bacteria from growing. A pack past its Best by date is not dangerous; it is just likely to be drier or blander than it was.
Why paper lists go stale — and three ways to keep yours going
Every freezer list starts well and most are abandoned within a month — the same pattern behind most food wasted at home. Not because the idea is wrong, but because the list falls behind the freezer: one pack goes in without a row, then three, and after that the sheet cannot be trusted, so nobody reads it.
Three habits keep it alive:
- A pen that lives on the freezer. Tie one to the magnet. If writing a row means going to find a pen, the row does not get written.
- A monthly redo. Ten minutes, once a month: copy what is left onto a fresh sheet, oldest first. It is also the moment you notice what to cook this week.
- An “eat this week” line. Circle the three rows with the nearest Best by dates. Those are next week’s dinners.
Keep the list on your phone instead
If crossing things off is the part you would rather skip, Frostlog is the same list on your phone — what Frostlog does. Tap a tile for chicken or peas, or snap a photo of the bag, and the pack goes in with its date and Best by already worked out. Each card frosts over as the pack gets older, and the Coming up list puts what to cook first on top. It is free for up to 35 items in the freezer at a time — the same number of rows as page one of this sheet.
Questions that come up
Is the freezer inventory sheet really free, with no e-mail?
Yes. Every button on this page downloads the PDF directly — there is no sign-up form, no newsletter and no password. Print it as many times as you like, share it with your family, and hang one on every freezer you own.
Should I download the Letter or the A4 version?
Letter if you are in the US or Canada and your printer takes 8.5 × 11 inch paper; A4 almost everywhere else. The content is the same; only the page size changes, so nothing gets cut off at the edges when you print.
Can I fill in the sheet on my computer?
Yes. The item, date and quantity fields are fillable: open the PDF in Preview, Acrobat Reader or your browser, type your list, then print or save it. On an iPad you can fill it in with the Apple Pencil in the Files app.
How often should I update a freezer inventory?
Cross things off as you take them out and write new packs in as they go in — that is the everyday part. Once a month, spend ten minutes redoing the sheet from scratch: move what is left onto a fresh page, oldest first. Lists die when they fall behind, not when they are started.
Is frozen food safe forever?
Food kept frozen at 0 °F stays safe indefinitely, according to the USDA — freezing stops the growth of bacteria. What changes over time is quality: texture, flavour, freezer burn. The months on the chart are about when food is at its best, not when it becomes unsafe.
Is there an app that does this instead?
Yes — we make one, Frostlog, and it keeps the same list on your phone. It is described once, at the end of this page. The sheet works on its own and is not a trial of anything.
