Support
One person builds and answers for Flossgrid. Write in plain words, say what the screen showed, and you get a reply from a human.
Useful in a first message: your iPhone model, the iOS version, the app version from Settings, and what the screen said. Contact support in Settings fills in the first three for you.
Common situations
- The app says my photo is too small.
- A stitch cannot hold detail smaller than itself, so Flossgrid wants about seven pixels of photo per stitch. A 140 by 112 chart needs at least 980 by 784 pixels inside the part you cropped to, not in the original file. Two things usually fix it: crop less tightly, or ask for a smaller chart. The screen tells you the largest size that photo will carry, so you can take that offer instead of guessing.
- My chart is full of single stitches in the sky.
- That is confetti, and it is almost always a colour count problem rather than a bug. Go back to Colors and shading and ask for fewer. On the worked example, going from 29 colours to 12 took the isolated stitches from 124 down to 25. There is also Clean up stray stitches on the chart screen, which merges nearly identical colours and removes stranded singles, with a before and after and an undo.
- How do I move my work to a new phone?
- Settings, then Back up, writes one file with every project, chart, marked square, note and your stash. Save it wherever you keep things, install Flossgrid on the new phone and use Restore. There is no iCloud sync yet, and the Settings screen says so rather than letting you assume there is. Take the backup before you wipe the old phone.
- How many strands should I use?
- The app suggests by fabric count: three strands on 6 to 11 count, two on 12 to 18, one on 19 and above. That is a starting point, not a rule, and you can set anything from one to six. It matters to the numbers as well as the look, because strand count changes how far a skein goes: at two strands a skein gives about 24 usable metres, at one strand about 48.
- The canvas count and the finished stitch size do not match.
- On waste canvas you stitch over two of its threads, not one, so the crosses come out at half the count on the label. Fourteen count canvas worked over two gives seven stitches to the inch and a cross about 3.6 mm across. Flossgrid asks for the count and the over setting separately and shows you the resulting stitch size in millimetres before you commit to a size.
- Do I need a stabiliser to stitch on a shirt?
- On a stretchy knit, yes, and the app says so: iron on a fusible stabiliser, pre-wash the garment, keep the tension relaxed. On denim and on tote canvas, no. That question is asked once, when you tell it what the garment is made of, and the checklist you get afterwards is the one for that material rather than a general list.
- I rebuilt a chart. What happened to my progress?
- It is carried over where the squares still line up, and the screen shows you what will happen before it happens: how many marks survive, how many cannot, and where your place moves to. If the result is not what you wanted there is an undo. Rebuilding is also how you change size or palette on a piece you have already started, which is why it was built to keep progress rather than to warn you off.
- How do I cancel, and what happens to my charts?
- Subscriptions live in the App Store: open the system Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling takes nothing away. Every chart you have already built keeps opening at full size, your progress stays marked, parked threads stay parked and your stash is untouched. What stops is building new charts above the free 10,000 stitch limit.
- I bought it but the app says I have not.
- Tap Restore purchases in Settings. It has to be the same Apple Account that made the purchase, and a different account signed into the App Store is the usual cause on a shared family device. Flossgrid Forever supports Family Sharing, so a purchase made by one family member should appear for the others once they restore. If restore reports nothing on the right account, send the receipt Apple emailed you.
Requirements
Flossgrid runs on iOS 26.0 and later, on iPhone. It needs no network connection for anything: building a chart, printing, exporting a PDF and stitching all work with the phone offline. There is no iPad layout and no Mac version yet.
What it does not do
Worth knowing before you write in, because these are decisions rather than faults. Flossgrid builds charts from photographs, so there is no blank grid to draw on and no way to import somebody else’s PDF chart. Threads are DMC; the Anchor and Madeira switch is visible but not finished, and the screen says so. There is no iCloud sync yet, and no French knots.
Getting your work out
Export PDF gives you the chart across pages with an overlap so the joins line up, plus a legend page, in colour or in black and white symbols. Backup gives you the whole app’s contents as a single file. Both are free, and both go through the normal iOS share sheet, so they can land in Files, in Mail or in whatever else you use.
Reporting something broken
Anything that loses work is dealt with first: a project that vanished, progress that reset, a backup that will not restore. If something disappears, do not delete the project and do not reinstall the app, because that is the one action that can turn a recoverable problem into real loss. Deleted projects sit in Recently Deleted for thirty days, so look there first. Then write, and say what you did immediately before it happened.
Questions about the stitching itself
How to read a chart, how much floss a piece really takes, what fabric count does to the size, and how waste canvas works are questions about cross stitch rather than about the app. Those are written up here:
